The Hidden Beauty of a Cannon Fodder Male Lead
1. Chu Rong woke up to find himself trapped in a novel. He wasn’t the hero; he was the mortal fiancé of the “all-consuming” protagonist shou (the bottom).
In the original book, this character was a nightmare. He was ugly, forced to hide his face behind a mask, and possessed zero talent for cultivation. He had only secured his engagement to the beautiful protagonist by shamelessly calling in an old family debt. To make matters worse, he was a leech—using his fiancé’s name to climb the social ladder and even trying to lay hands on him. Eventually, the protagonist’s powerful admirers got fed up and killed him, leaving him with no grave to call his own.
When Chu Rong transmigrated, the timing couldn’t have been worse. The original character’s lies had just been exposed. The protagonist’s icy soul-sword was pressed right against Chu Rong’s throat.
“Six months,” the protagonist said, his voice cold as death. “Once the sect’s mountain array opens, you will leave on your own.”
2. Chu Rong knew exactly how wide the gap was between a mortal and an immortal. He immediately dropped the old act, behaved himself, and didn’t dare cross a single line.
“Hypocrite,” the protagonist muttered, his eyes flashing with a disgust that the other male leads caught instantly.
But then came a thick, dark night. The “admirers” snuck into the back mountains, expecting to find the loser. Instead, they saw a figure in the clear spring pool, clothes half-slipped, dark hair spilling over his shoulders. His pale fingers were holding that hideous, terrifying mask.
Hearing the noise, the person in the pool turned his head slightly. His lips were a vivid red, his face so breathtakingly beautiful he looked like a god.
3. The six-month deadline hadn’t even arrived before the original character’s old dirty laundry was aired out. The Great Immortal Sects gathered to demand justice, and everyone in the Qingyang Heaven Sect urged the protagonist to throw Chu Rong to the wolves to settle the unrest.
Chu Rong was just about to step forward and take the hit.
But the “protagonist’s admirers” spoke up first. “A man should answer for his own deeds. We shouldn’t involve the innocent,” they declared. “But before he confesses, let the Immortal Sects witness: the Heavenly Marriage Contract is hereby void.”
The crowd agreed immediately. Nobody noticed the deep, dark obsession in the eyes of those powerful men as they looked at Chu Rong—a gaze so intense it would make anyone’s skin crawl.
